{ Chapter 32 }

~ Skye ~

Aiden’s hand firmly grasped mine as we slipped into the back of Hotel Auric.

The shroud of darkness kept us unseen, and we could slip back out of town if that became necessary. My steps slowed, but I wasn’t relenting.

I knew just as well as Aiden did that the first test to coming back to life on the mountain would be Helen.

Aiden had convinced me that Charlotte could forgive anything. And I had to believe that of my friend, as much as it curdled my stomach to think of what I’d done to her.

Triaten was another matter. We both knew he would be suspicious of me, and wary of me around Charlotte, but Aiden was also convinced he could strong-arm Triaten into embracing me back into the fold.

It would take time, I knew, for them to trust me again. It had taken a long time for me to trust myself again.

Helen was the one Aiden was most worried about. With her knowledge of my time on the dark side, of what I had been capable of in Montana, Helen had the power to squash any hope we had for returning to the mountain. Returning home.

And that was what I so desperately wanted. So desperately needed. Home.

After leaving Leander’s mountain in Nepal, we had spent another month of slowly putting me into society—far away from the watch of the elders.

Initially wary and watching my every movement, Aiden had come to accept that my sheer will alone could control my body, control my urges. But I hadn’t surprised myself at all. Once I’d made the decision in that moment with my blade pointed at Aiden’s heart that I would do no more harm, I was done. I was.

I still thought about it daily, hourly sometimes, that singular feeling of ecstasy that only violence could get me. But that didn’t mean it had a hold on me any longer. I finally had a hold on it.

I knew there had been a few sketchy moments since leaving Leander when Aiden feared I was going to slide, but I’d held onto control.

I proved it time and again. And now all I wanted was to go home.

Aiden was reluctant for my safety, but he wholeheartedly wanted the very same thing. We both wanted the ease of our home. The laughter. The fun.

I wanted to be back to where I was the most natural. The happiest.

But first, Helen.

Aiden led me up three flights of skinny stairs at the back of the hotel, two floors above the main parlor. We stepped from the stairwell into the main hallway, and Aiden went to one of only two doors on the floor.

He looked back over his shoulder at me.

My hands clammy, I was petrified, but I gave him a small smile. I wanted this so badly. Home. We were so close.

“This is Helen’s suite. Are you ready?”

“Yes—but Aiden, if this doesn’t work…” My voice trailed.

Aiden squeezed my hand. “If it doesn’t, we will find a new home.
